Winter car prep doesn’t have to be daunting. The goal is to give your car everything it needs to make it through the cold months. If you time your regularly scheduled maintenance around the cold season where you live, winter car maintenance will feel like any other normal tune up.
Always make sure that your vehicle’s exterior lights are working. Check all hazard lights, blinkers, headlights, brake lights, and parking lights to make sure they are working as designed. Winter can also be hard on car batteries, so now is a great time to have yours inspected.
Your engine coolant and oil are going to be tested during the cold months. Cold engine start ups are one of the leading causes of engine wear, so having quality, fresh oil with proper viscosity ratings is key to keeping engine wear to a minimum. Your engine coolant is also critical for keeping the engine from freezing overnight while it sits. It must then handle high temperatures the moment the vehicle is turned on. Keep engine coolant full, and make sure that it is in good condition.
If you live in an area where snow tires and/or snow chains are commonly used, now is the time to get them in order. Install your winter set of tires if equipped. Check your tire chains for breaks or signs of wear that could potentially do damage to your vehicle. This is also a good time to check your windshield wipers, so that you know they are ready to go when winter weather hits.
